PUPPET

Puppet was a girl of the streets, abused by the misery and the hunger, produced by the fatality that had followed her steps since always. During all her life she had made everything to survive. She had cheated, stolen, mercilessly, to the poor careless people who had trusted her warm smile and in the innocent eyes that appeared over the layer of filth which always covered her face, as a mask.

Sitting on a bench in front of the Church, she patiently waited for her next victim. She had very short hair, mowed raggedly with a poorly sharpened cutting knife, and she wore old and ragged clothes, not very clean, of unknown origin. She was more or less fifteen or sixteen years old, if her mother had survived the delivery, maybe she would have known her exact age, but she didn´t survive and, from that moment on, Puppet´s life had been a continuous downhill race to hell.

First, the orphanage came, with the monks, their excessive punishments and their boring prayers, with their long hands, their mouths wet by saliva and their nocturnal visits. Then, their repented crying came and their wish for forgiveness, their prayers to their god, their penitential practices, their floggings, the corporal punishments to the child for being the origin of the sin, the one the devil sent to tempt them. Until the night came again, and they returned to the child´s cell, avid of desire and lust. Once she was old enough to ran away, she did so. There wasn´t any door or lock that resisted to her skilful hands. She had a gift.

But beyond the orphanage, the street hadn´t proved to be a better place, but worse. Hunger, coldness, misery, dirt, dangers on every corner, the monks did not abuse her anymore, but anyone could do it now in those suburbs without any law or conscience.

She would surely have died, if the old man hadn´t picked her up from a stinky corner, where the children like her had left her abandoned, lying on a pond of muddy water, peeing and smelly wastes of rotten vegetables, after kicking her to steal a slice of hard bread that an old lady had given her instead of a copper coin.

The old man cured her and educated her. He was an itinerant artist who had a puppet show. As she didn´t want to tell him the name the monks had given her, since she hated that name as much as she hated the monks, he simply called her Puppet and she liked that name. And she loved the old man as a father, because she had never met hers, but there were only a few years of happiness, since the cold winter and a chronic cough, not well cured, killed the old man, throwing Puppet again to the street and to its dark dangers.

Luckily for the girl, soon after the man´s death, her steps took Puppet before a truant, a drunken man, thief and quarrelsome with whom she associated. The small man taught her all the tricks of the trade and she leaned them quickly.
